Spanish Sworn Translation for Civil Certificates

Official translations prepared for legal, administrative, and civil processes in Spain

Civil certificates sit at the heart of some of life’s most significant moments — getting married in Spain, handling an inheritance, registering a family member, or updating official records. When these documents have been issued in the UK, Spanish authorities will require them to be translated into Spanish by a sworn translator before they can be formally processed.

The Spanish Civil Registry (Registro Civil) and other official institutions require sworn translations (traducciones juradas) prepared by a translator officially authorised by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores). A standard certified translation is not sufficient — only a sworn translation carries the legal recognition required for civil registration and official use in Spain.

We prepare sworn translations for the full range of civil certificates commonly required in Spain — from birth and marriage certificates to death certificates, Certificates of No Impediment, divorce decrees, and deed polls — all prepared to the standard required by the Civil Registry and Spanish authorities.

All civil certificates submitted to us are handled with strict confidentiality, processed securely in line with UK GDPR, and accessed only by authorised personnel involved in delivering the translation. We understand that civil documents often contain sensitive personal and family information, and we treat them accordingly.

Why civil certificates require a sworn translation for Spain

Civil certificates issued in the UK — whether a birth certificate, marriage certificate, or death certificate — cannot be formally processed by Spanish authorities in English. Before they can be accepted by the Civil Registry (Registro Civil) or other official institutions, they must be translated into Spanish by a sworn translator authorised by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A sworn translation carries the translator’s official certification, signature, and stamp — confirming that it is an accurate and legally recognised translation of the original. Without this, documents may be refused, returned, or held pending further clarification, which can cause significant delays — particularly in time-sensitive situations such as marriage registration or inheritance proceedings.

All translations in this category are overseen by Ana Martínez, Lead Translator, who has 20 years of experience in Spanish sworn translation — including extensive experience with civil documents prepared for submission to the Spanish Civil Registry, notaries, and official institutions across Spain.

Common civil certificates translated for Spain

The most frequently requested civil documents include birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, Certificates of No Impediment, divorce decrees, and deed polls. These are typically needed for marriage registration with the Civil Registry (Registro Civil), nationality applications (nacionalidad española), inheritance and succession matters, updating civil records, and confirming identity or family relationships for official purposes in Spain.

If you are unsure which documents you need translated, or whether an apostille is also required, get in touch at info@spanishsworntranslators.co.uk — we’re happy to help you work out exactly what’s needed before you order.

A note on turnaround for civil certificates

Turnaround varies depending on the document type and length. Standard single-page documents — such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, and Certificates of No Impediment — are typically completed within 1 to 2 working days, with same-day options available for urgent requests. Longer or more complex documents — such as divorce decrees with financial settlements or multi-page death certificates — typically take 2 to 7 working days depending on page count and complexity. Turnaround is confirmed when we receive your document. If you have a Civil Registry appointment, an inheritance deadline, or a marriage registration date approaching, let us know and we will do everything we can to accommodate it.
